Chapter Three

Eden’s heart sprang up to his throat with a wave of nausea that threatened to consume him. Did he know? About what had happened in Tartarus? About Micah? He couldn’t. Eden’s world spun. “Where, Sir?”

“He’s waiting in my office. He asked to speak with you directly, Voss.”

“Did he say why he was here, Sir?”

“He didn’t. Just asked for you. And asked for privacy.” Green studied Eden with fearful eyes. “I wondered if perhaps you had some idea as to what this was about?”

Eden shook his head. “No, Sir.” He felt sick.

Captain Green nodded. “That’s what I thought. Well, best not keep him waiting. Follow me, Voss.”

The trek to Green’s office seemed longer than usual. Eden walked the entire distance of long hallways made of etched stone with his heart pounding in his chest. Questions swirled in his head. A million horrific scenarios for Tovar’s presence claimed Eden’s sanity as his feet pounded on the tile floor in Green’s wake.

When they reached the closed door to Green’s office, the older officer rapped gently on the solid wood grain with a wary look in Eden’s direction. “My Lord, President Tovar?”

A voice Eden recognized emanated from the other side of the door, causing the hairs on the back of his neck to stand on end. “Come in.”

The gentle ease of the door on its hinges took Eden’s breath away. Green stood in the doorway, obscuring Eden’s view into the quaint office. “My Lord, President Tovar. Lieutenant Voss here, as you requested.” Green stepped aside, and for the first time in many years, Eden caught a glimpse of his stepfather, President Axel Tovar. He stood tall against the backdrop of bookcases that adorned the walls of Green’s humble office, looking every inch the dignified nobleman he was.
